CASE FILE 1013 · FICTIONAL CASE STUDY

The Morley
matter.

Former employees v. Morley Cigarette Company

CLOSED · RECORD UNSEALED

The file that wouldn’t stay closed.

When a group of former Morley employees raised concerns about unpublished product research, their positions were eliminated. The company described the decision as routine restructuring. The documents suggested a different story.

Following the paper trail.

Our team connected internal correspondence, laboratory records, and testimony from the employees who had first raised the alarm. Scully’s medical training helped distinguish what the research showed from what the company said it showed.

Byers, Frohike & Langly reconstructed the digital timeline, recovering archived records that had been considered unavailable. Mulder identified the same authorization appearing across a series of supposedly unrelated decisions.

THE OUTCOME

The evidence entered the record.

The employees secured a favorable judgment, reinstatement, and a court-ordered release of the concealed research. The facts became public. The file stayed open long enough to matter.

CASE FILE 1013 / ADDENDUM

Closing report

The recovered records are consistent with the employees’ testimony. Their reinstatement and the release of Morley’s research are now matters of public record. One entry in the original laboratory log bears tomorrow’s date. I have retained the document for further examination.

Evidence gives us a way to distinguish what we know from what we are willing to believe. I have relied on that distinction throughout this investigation. Yet a record, however complete, can only preserve what has been brought to light. I am left wondering how much of what we call certainty is simply the part of the truth that survived.
